DIVORCED AT 25: 5 WAYS I LEARNED TO LOVE WHEN I WALKED AWAY

I stared blankly out the window and fought back tears as reality set in. I had finally admitted to myself that I had rushed down a path toward what I thought was the “American Dream”  and it turned out to be nothing but a sham. I was already half way through my check-list of ingredients for the perfect recipe of happiness and all I felt was numb.  Marriage…  check.  Successful career…  check. Cute little home…  check.  Cute little dog to go in the cute little home…  check.  Check, check, check.

As it turned out, my checklist was just a way to avoid the reality that I was not happy. I rushed into marriage because I was terribly insecure. I saw marriage as way to prove to myself, and everyone else, that I was worthy of love. At the time I equated happiness with achievements and success, and marriage was a representation of both to me. I spent several years trying to convince myself that I had to stand by the choices I made. Yet there was something inside me whispering that I should go. It was gut wrenching to imagine what people would think if I walked away. Eventually, my thirst for an authentic life became stronger than my fear of failing the people I loved.

After I admitted my truth to my husband and family, I moved into a tiny studio apartment where I would live alone for the first time in my life. The loneliness was unbearable. I was ashamed, overwhelmed with grief, and full of self-doubt. This was the first time I had ever publicly admitted failure. My entire identity of being a young, successful, flawless person was shattered. To add insult to injury, the heat was not working in my tiny, depressing apartment in the dead of winter.

As the temperature outside reached freezing, I laid shivering in my bed, sobbing uncontrollably. I felt exposed and raw with all of my flaws hanging out for the world to see.  In that moment of utter devastation I realized I had a decision to make. I could either succumb to the feelings of failure and isolation or do things differently for the first time in my life. Here is how I began to pick up the pieces of my shattered identity and fall in love with myself:

1.   I RECOGNIZED MY OWN RESILIENCE

Shame lurked in every thought that entered my mind. I began to actively recognize the shame and work through it in a way that would allow me to grow. I replaced flooding thoughts of my public failure with affirmations about how much I had overcome not only during my divorce, but throughout my entire life. I recognized my own strength and began to admire it.

2.   I STOPPED TRYING TO BE PERFECT

I gave myself the permission to be a flawed human being. It soon felt silly and conceited that I had once thought otherwise. I realized that my obsession with striving for perfection led to horrible self-talk resulting in insecurity.

3.   I ACCEPTED RESPONSIBILITY

I recognized that I minimized my purpose and value by giving into my overwhelming need to be loved by someone. In prioritizing that fantasy above all other parts of my identity, I had completely ignored my responsibility to myself. In a moment of clarity, I recognized that I could discover my true needs and fulfill them without being “completed” by a partner. I alone was responsible for living the life that I wanted.

4.   I DISCOVERED WHAT NOURISHED ME

We eat food to strengthen our bodies and to give us physical energy. I learned that I needed to make time to “feed" my mind and soul and nourish my spiritual energy. I began to truly get to know myself and understand what nourished me. I spent time thinking about what made me feel good, what gave me energy, what soothed me, and what made me feel joy.

5.   I ROMANCED MYSELF

I decided to re-purpose my once unhealthy obsession with having a partner to adore me into a commitment of learning how to adore myself. I took myself on dates, I cooked complex meals for myself, I took bubble baths and rented movies I wanted to see. I discovered that self-love could mean that I was my own best friend and damn good company at that!

Eventually, that lonely studio apartment became a haven on my journey to discover love. I realized that it was filled with the best company I could ask for: me.

THE VOICE INSIDE YOUR HEAD

How we speak to ourselves matters. It matters BIG TIME.
Most of us are in a state of constant mental chatter. We talk to ourselves all day long and, unfortunately, this self-talk is frequently negative. Often it is tainted with guilt about our past or anxiety about our future.

SO I ASK YOU: What are you saying to yourself as you look at the refection in the mirror, squeeze into those tight jeans, or miss that deadline? What are you thinking about yourself when someone doesn't understand your sense of humor, disagrees with you, or doesn't text as often as you would like? Know this:

We interpret the world based on our own assumptions and beliefs - our thoughts about the way things are or should be. When we look at the world through a lens of love, trust, + optimism, we tend to see good everywhere. When we use a lens of fear or judgement, we find hundreds of reasons to be distrustful.

This concept is true of our inner dialogues as well. If we identify, affirm, + support our inner selves, we feel whole, loved, and at peace even when life produces challenges + surprises.  If we criticize + demean our inner selves, we suffer + we struggle to maintain our sense of self worth + self love.

The good news? We can test, challenge + change our self-talk. We can change some of the negative aspects of our thinking by challenging the irrational parts + replacing them with more reasonable thoughts. With practice, we can learn to notice our negative self-talk as it happens, + consciously choose to think about the situation in a more realistic + helpful way.

TRY THIS: next time you catch yourself engaging in self-trash-talking, immediately think the word  "CANCEL" and replace your thought with one of these following affirmations:
  • I am capable.
  • I know who I am and I am enough.
  • I choose to be present in all that I do.
  • I choose to think thoughts that serve me well.
  • I choose to reach for a better feeling.
  • I share my happiness with those around me.
  • My body is my vehicle in life; I choose to fill it with goodness.
  • I feel energetic and alive.
  • My life is unfolding beautifully.
  • I am confident.
  • I am beautiful/handsome.
  • I always observe before reacting.
  • I know with time and effort I can achieve.
  • I love challenges and what I learn from overcoming them.
  • Each step is taking me to where I want to be.
Our self-talk creates our reality. Is it time we rewire our brains + create new thoughts + habits?

FREE VALENTINE'S DAY iPHONE + ANDROID WALLPAPER

Let's talk about love. Let's talk about loving BIG. The kind of love that makes you giddy inside + feel totally consumed. A love makes you feel safe + content. A love you cannot live without.

Do you love yourself this big?

There was a time in my life where I felt totally alone. Until then, I had filled my life with noise + people. I was never alone. Ever. It scared the shit out of me. So when I had no choice but to be alone, I had to cope. I had to hang out with myself. And you know what? Through years of self discovery, I learned to love myself BIG! I also discovered tools + techniques to continue loving myself BIG even when it doesn't come naturally. I'll be sharing these over the course of my #livewell series.

I speak to so many women who are afraid to be alone, to have a sparse social calendar, to not be "wanted". Countless strong, intelligent + beautiful women repeat the same story to me. They chip away at their self worth because they are not meeting outrageous expectations of themselves.

Even if you have a partner + you are desperately in love,  it does not guarantee that your life will be any better or that you will be happier. If you are not at home with yourself, if you don’t like yourself, or you haven’t made peace with things you’ve done in the past, you will be dealing with that baggage forever.  No relationship can fulfill that void.

It’s time to explode the impossible ideals we strive for, + to stop measuring our desirableness by external standards. It’s time to seek the life we’ve always dreamed about. Happiness begins on the inside, + we alone are responsible to walk our own journeys.

This February let's ditch the stale chocolates adorned in heart-shaped boxes + focus on loving ourselves BIG. Here are 5 ways we can start:
  1. LET'S STOP TRYING TO BE PERFECT. Not only is it BORING, it is unattainable. Striving for perfection is essentially committing to beat ourselves up every time when we fail.
  2. LET'S STOP COMPARING OURSELVES. There is always going to be someone skinnier, prettier, more successful, + less awkward than we are. Let's build a bridge + get over it.
  3. LET'S BE AUTHENTIC. Let's stop loving the person we wish we were but the person we actually are instead.
  4. LET'S FORGIVE OURSELVES. Every day is a new beginning + holds a lesson to be learned. Did you not read #1?
  5. LET'S NURTURE OURSELVES. Let's set aside time for us. JUST us. Let's go on solo dates! Let's experience peace, love + joy in blissful solitude.

5 TIPS TO MOTIVATE YOUR MOJO

mo·jo

noun \ˈmō-(ˌ)jō\
: a power that may seem magical and that allows someone to be very effective, successful, etc. -Merriam-Webster

1. BELIEVE ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE

Surrounding yourself with positivity is the first step towards achieving your goals. No one ever found success by deciding they couldn't from the start. Can you imagine if Colonel Sanders gave up on his dream of bringing delicious fried chicken to all man kind? We would have no idea how scrumptious chicken could actually taste! His secret recipe containing 11 herbs + spices was rejected over 1000 times before he finally found success.

“I made a resolve then that I was going to amount to something if I could. And no hours, nor amount of labor, nor amount of money would deter me from giving the best that there was in me. And I have done that ever since, and I win by it. I know.”
- Colonel Sanders

2.  PRACTICE GOOD HABITS

If you wait until you feel like doing something, you may never do it at all. If you simply begin a task, you can actually feel more motivated as you do it. Focus on the habits you want to acquire + those you want to ditch. Prioritize them + pick one at a time to focus on. Pay attention to the things may trigger distraction from your goals. Be kind to yourself + find small rewards when you begin to make your desired habits stick. There's an app for that!

3. CREATE A SENSE OF URGENCY

Many tasks don’t have deadlines, which leads to procrastination. That’s why faking urgency can help. If you have a mound of laundry to put away, wait 20 minutes before your favorite show, + start folding!

If you need to create a sense of urgency you have to be fully present in the here + now. Urgency only exists in the moment. Try focusing on your highest priority activities. These are the 20 percent of activities that will get you 80 percent of the results you desire.

4. ELIMINATE UNNECESSARY ACTIVITIES

Your time is your most precious commodity. If you are bogged down with unnecessary tasks + events, the momentum you’ve been working so hard to create will inevitably slow down. You are the guardian of your schedule and you may have to identify the unnecessary + eliminate, delegate or outsource wherever possible.

Create standard routines in your schedule so you can achieve a disciplined approach + be ready for important events + deadlines. Effort is often wasted when people don't have a clear path to success. Plan when you will work on tasks, stick to the time allotted for your tasks, + schedule-in down time.

5. GET THE SUPPORT YOU NEED

Find people, places, and things that nourish your potential! Actively hunt for inspiration and encouragement. Share your goals with your closest loved ones and ask for their accountability and support. Find role models whose success can be attributed to hard work and skills and not to a rare lightning strike.

5 GIFTS THAT DON'T COST A THING

Despite the perfect imagery of presents, decorations, + happy families that dominate our December advertisements, the holiday season can be a time of immense pressure + stress. The wisdom that comes with being the ripe old age of thirty now tells me to reject the mindless consumerism that is sensationalized + KEEP IT SIMPLE! Put your time + energy into gifts that will deepen your relationships this holiday season. Here are 5 free and meaningful ways give to your loved ones:

1. WORDS

Take the time to craft a handmade letter and thoughtfully express your appreciation for them. Choose a word that describes them + tell them why. Not a word smith? Jot down some song lyrics that speak to your feelings.

Compliment them often! Think about things that they do that people may not often acknowledge. Let them know if they have helped you think about something differently.  Tell them what qualities you admire about them.

Ask how they are truly doing. Take time out of your day to talk just about what is happening with them. Spend as much time talking about them as they wish.

2. SKILLS

Are you handy around the house? Do you make a mean signature dish? Lend your skills to help them out.

You possess a skill set that is unique and can benefit others who hold different talents. Whether you are offering a manicure or an oil change, your skills can be a true gift to others.

3. TIME

How often is "I am so busy" the first response we give when asked to sacrifice our time for someone else? Fight the urge + make your loved ones a priority in your schedule. Offer to babysit so they can go on a date,  walk their dog on a Saturday, or house sit while they are out of town.

Pencil Ink time into your schedule to spend with family and friends. Spend time together intentionally relating, + not just being potatoes in front of a TV. Go for walks, have device-free dinners, and get the most out of your relationships.

4. WORK

When is the last time you asked "What can I do to help you today"? Offering to help them may be the most impactful gift you can give.

Clean out their fridge, paint that room they can't get to, shovel snow, help them move. In 2 years they won't remember that gift card you sent, but they will remember the sweat your put in for them. Roll up your sleeves + get to work!

5. AFFECTION

To me, the word "affection" immediately brings to mind two horny teenagers all over each other in the back of a movie theater. The truth is: affection can take many different forms, often less vomit-inducing. In fact, the 4 tips above are all forms of affection.

Give hugs often. Squeeze their hand and tell them how much you care about them + what they mean to you. Send them brief, thoughtful texts that show how much you care. Let them know they are on your mind + that you love them.

Taking the time to focus on your relationships + give these free gifts on a consistent basis will mean more than any gift shoved down your throat by the holiday commercial gods. Let's remember to invest in something worthwhile this holiday season: friends + family.
