DIVORCED AT 25: 5 WAYS I LEARNED TO LOVE WHEN I WALKED AWAY

I stared blankly out the window and fought back tears as reality set in. I had finally admitted to myself that I had rushed down a path toward what I thought was the “American Dream”  and it turned out to be nothing but a sham. I was already half way through my check-list of ingredients for the perfect recipe of happiness and all I felt was numb.  Marriage…  check.  Successful career…  check. Cute little home…  check.  Cute little dog to go in the cute little home…  check.  Check, check, check.

As it turned out, my checklist was just a way to avoid the reality that I was not happy. I rushed into marriage because I was terribly insecure. I saw marriage as way to prove to myself, and everyone else, that I was worthy of love. At the time I equated happiness with achievements and success, and marriage was a representation of both to me. I spent several years trying to convince myself that I had to stand by the choices I made. Yet there was something inside me whispering that I should go. It was gut wrenching to imagine what people would think if I walked away. Eventually, my thirst for an authentic life became stronger than my fear of failing the people I loved.

After I admitted my truth to my husband and family, I moved into a tiny studio apartment where I would live alone for the first time in my life. The loneliness was unbearable. I was ashamed, overwhelmed with grief, and full of self-doubt. This was the first time I had ever publicly admitted failure. My entire identity of being a young, successful, flawless person was shattered. To add insult to injury, the heat was not working in my tiny, depressing apartment in the dead of winter.

As the temperature outside reached freezing, I laid shivering in my bed, sobbing uncontrollably. I felt exposed and raw with all of my flaws hanging out for the world to see.  In that moment of utter devastation I realized I had a decision to make. I could either succumb to the feelings of failure and isolation or do things differently for the first time in my life. Here is how I began to pick up the pieces of my shattered identity and fall in love with myself:

1.   I RECOGNIZED MY OWN RESILIENCE

Shame lurked in every thought that entered my mind. I began to actively recognize the shame and work through it in a way that would allow me to grow. I replaced flooding thoughts of my public failure with affirmations about how much I had overcome not only during my divorce, but throughout my entire life. I recognized my own strength and began to admire it.

2.   I STOPPED TRYING TO BE PERFECT

I gave myself the permission to be a flawed human being. It soon felt silly and conceited that I had once thought otherwise. I realized that my obsession with striving for perfection led to horrible self-talk resulting in insecurity.

3.   I ACCEPTED RESPONSIBILITY

I recognized that I minimized my purpose and value by giving into my overwhelming need to be loved by someone. In prioritizing that fantasy above all other parts of my identity, I had completely ignored my responsibility to myself. In a moment of clarity, I recognized that I could discover my true needs and fulfill them without being “completed” by a partner. I alone was responsible for living the life that I wanted.

4.   I DISCOVERED WHAT NOURISHED ME

We eat food to strengthen our bodies and to give us physical energy. I learned that I needed to make time to “feed" my mind and soul and nourish my spiritual energy. I began to truly get to know myself and understand what nourished me. I spent time thinking about what made me feel good, what gave me energy, what soothed me, and what made me feel joy.

5.   I ROMANCED MYSELF

I decided to re-purpose my once unhealthy obsession with having a partner to adore me into a commitment of learning how to adore myself. I took myself on dates, I cooked complex meals for myself, I took bubble baths and rented movies I wanted to see. I discovered that self-love could mean that I was my own best friend and damn good company at that!

Eventually, that lonely studio apartment became a haven on my journey to discover love. I realized that it was filled with the best company I could ask for: me.

THE VOICE INSIDE YOUR HEAD

How we speak to ourselves matters. It matters BIG TIME.
Most of us are in a state of constant mental chatter. We talk to ourselves all day long and, unfortunately, this self-talk is frequently negative. Often it is tainted with guilt about our past or anxiety about our future.

SO I ASK YOU: What are you saying to yourself as you look at the refection in the mirror, squeeze into those tight jeans, or miss that deadline? What are you thinking about yourself when someone doesn't understand your sense of humor, disagrees with you, or doesn't text as often as you would like? Know this:

We interpret the world based on our own assumptions and beliefs - our thoughts about the way things are or should be. When we look at the world through a lens of love, trust, + optimism, we tend to see good everywhere. When we use a lens of fear or judgement, we find hundreds of reasons to be distrustful.

This concept is true of our inner dialogues as well. If we identify, affirm, + support our inner selves, we feel whole, loved, and at peace even when life produces challenges + surprises.  If we criticize + demean our inner selves, we suffer + we struggle to maintain our sense of self worth + self love.

The good news? We can test, challenge + change our self-talk. We can change some of the negative aspects of our thinking by challenging the irrational parts + replacing them with more reasonable thoughts. With practice, we can learn to notice our negative self-talk as it happens, + consciously choose to think about the situation in a more realistic + helpful way.

TRY THIS: next time you catch yourself engaging in self-trash-talking, immediately think the word  "CANCEL" and replace your thought with one of these following affirmations:
  • I am capable.
  • I know who I am and I am enough.
  • I choose to be present in all that I do.
  • I choose to think thoughts that serve me well.
  • I choose to reach for a better feeling.
  • I share my happiness with those around me.
  • My body is my vehicle in life; I choose to fill it with goodness.
  • I feel energetic and alive.
  • My life is unfolding beautifully.
  • I am confident.
  • I am beautiful/handsome.
  • I always observe before reacting.
  • I know with time and effort I can achieve.
  • I love challenges and what I learn from overcoming them.
  • Each step is taking me to where I want to be.
Our self-talk creates our reality. Is it time we rewire our brains + create new thoughts + habits?

LIVE NOURISHED

WHAT NOURISHES YOU?

When I think of the word "nourish" I think of sustenance. I think of strengthening, soothing, + livelihood. I think of all of the things I love to do + experience when I am not in get shit done mode.

We eat food + drink water to strengthen our bodies + to give us the physical energy we need to live our lives. Making time to "feed" our minds + souls can nourish our spiritual energy. If we do not know ourselves + understand what nourishes us, it can be difficult to lift ourselves out of the dark days + to combat our stress.

Spend some time thinking about what makes you feel good. What gives you energy? What makes you feel soothed? What makes you feel joy? What NOURISHES you?

Here is my list for today. It will look different (yet familiar) tomorrow, + it will evolve each day after.
  • The "Heart Meditations" station on Pandora
  • Kale Blazer Naked Juice
  • Puppy kisses
  • Bubble baths
  • Alone time
  • Meditation
  • The sauna
  • Fresh air
  • Lemon candles
  • Hugs
  • Exercise
  • Blogging

Knowing what nourishes us is just the first step. Making time and space to nourish ourselves is the challenge. Make your own list and set some time aside to prioritize nourishment in your life.

FREE VALENTINE'S DAY iPHONE + ANDROID WALLPAPER

Let's talk about love. Let's talk about loving BIG. The kind of love that makes you giddy inside + feel totally consumed. A love makes you feel safe + content. A love you cannot live without.

Do you love yourself this big?

There was a time in my life where I felt totally alone. Until then, I had filled my life with noise + people. I was never alone. Ever. It scared the shit out of me. So when I had no choice but to be alone, I had to cope. I had to hang out with myself. And you know what? Through years of self discovery, I learned to love myself BIG! I also discovered tools + techniques to continue loving myself BIG even when it doesn't come naturally. I'll be sharing these over the course of my #livewell series.

I speak to so many women who are afraid to be alone, to have a sparse social calendar, to not be "wanted". Countless strong, intelligent + beautiful women repeat the same story to me. They chip away at their self worth because they are not meeting outrageous expectations of themselves.

Even if you have a partner + you are desperately in love,  it does not guarantee that your life will be any better or that you will be happier. If you are not at home with yourself, if you don’t like yourself, or you haven’t made peace with things you’ve done in the past, you will be dealing with that baggage forever.  No relationship can fulfill that void.

It’s time to explode the impossible ideals we strive for, + to stop measuring our desirableness by external standards. It’s time to seek the life we’ve always dreamed about. Happiness begins on the inside, + we alone are responsible to walk our own journeys.

This February let's ditch the stale chocolates adorned in heart-shaped boxes + focus on loving ourselves BIG. Here are 5 ways we can start:
  1. LET'S STOP TRYING TO BE PERFECT. Not only is it BORING, it is unattainable. Striving for perfection is essentially committing to beat ourselves up every time when we fail.
  2. LET'S STOP COMPARING OURSELVES. There is always going to be someone skinnier, prettier, more successful, + less awkward than we are. Let's build a bridge + get over it.
  3. LET'S BE AUTHENTIC. Let's stop loving the person we wish we were but the person we actually are instead.
  4. LET'S FORGIVE OURSELVES. Every day is a new beginning + holds a lesson to be learned. Did you not read #1?
  5. LET'S NURTURE OURSELVES. Let's set aside time for us. JUST us. Let's go on solo dates! Let's experience peace, love + joy in blissful solitude.

THE WELLNESS JOURNEY

WELLNESS IS NOT THE ABSENCE OF ILLNESS.

WELLNESS IS A CHOICE. WELLNESS IS A PRIVILEGE. WELLNESS IS A PROCESS.

Wellness is a way of life that you design with the intent of achieving your highest potential of well-being. Wellness is not a fixed state, but a journey toward taking care of your physical, spiritual, + emotional self. My own search for wellness has been a windy road to say the least. I have traveled through codependency, defensiveness + people pleasing to reach a place of openness. When I took responsibility for my own happiness and acknowledged my own power, I began to trust my own answers.

TWO FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPLES YOU MUST EMBRACE WHILE TRAVELING YOUR WELLNESS JOURNEY:

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE.  You are responsible for discovering your true needs and fulfilling them. You are responsible for living the life that you want rather than just reacting to what is in front of you. You are responsible for seeking meaningful experiences, creating fulfillment, + nourishing relationships that matter to you.

YOU ARE LOVE. Self-love means caring for all aspects of yourself + honoring your uniqueness. Self-love means exercising compassion and forgiveness for yourself. It means that you realize that you are your own best friend + damn good company at that.

I will be exploring the concept of wellness in a new series of posts I am calling my #livewell movement. Walk alongside me on this journey, won't you?
